| The retreat center
was founded in 1942 by congregations of the Christian Church (Disciples
of Christ) in Western Washington and their ownership continues. Since its
founding, the purpose of the center has been to be a place of peace,
solitude, learning about and experiencing the natural environment for people
of all ages who are from a broad spectrum of religious and non-religious
backgrounds. While much of the camp's buildings were constructed during the 1950's, the last 20 years have brought much change to the landscape. In 1984 Gwinwood saw the addition of a self-contained separate retreat center (Westwood) and construction continued in the late 90's with new duplex cabins replacing older lodging facilities. 2004 saw a major addition to the Westwood Retreat Center.
The Christian Church Conference Grounds of Western
Washington Corporation, Gwinwood, is non-profit and solvent. The operation
is completely self-supporting for operating expenses and minor capital
improvements.
The conference center is run by a dedicated staff. The
conference grounds managers are Art and Tricia Uchytil.
